A Brief History
Reiki (ray key) is a natural healing technique. 'Rei' translated as Universal and 'Ki' translating to Energy. It is thought to have originated in Tibet thousands of years ago, Reiki was then re-discovered by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist in the 1800's. It was his purpose to find how Buddha healed the sick. His 10 year quest led him to study the teachings of Christ, and the sacred literature of Japan, China, India, and Tibet. At the end of this quest the full system of Reiki came to him during a mystical experience on the Holy Mountain of Kuriyama in Japan. Mikao Usui initiated sixteen masters, one of whom was Chujiro Hayashi.
Dr. Hayashi, at 47 yrs of age, received Reiki teacher training from Dr. Usui. For almost ten years he ran a Reiki clinic and during those ten years, he came up with a more complex set of hand positions and divided the training schedule for new practitioners into the 3 levels (degrees) they are known today. Thirteen masters were trained by Dr. Hayashi, one of whom was Mrs Hawayo Takata. After she had been healed from serious illness in Dr. Hayashi's clinic, Mrs. Takata decided to learn Reiki. At least a year was spent working for Dr. Hayashi in his clinic before receiving her second degree. In 1938, she completed her third degree, receiving her teacher training from Dr. Hayashi.
Hawayo Takata, prominently featured in Reiki history, is the master who brought Reiki to the western world. She resided in Hawaii and before her death in the 70's, taught 22 Reiki masters. Most of the Reiki we know today has come from her lineage. |
Today
Reiki has gained much popularity in the last few decades being widely, and successfully, used for pain control in hospitals and hospices. It has also been used for relaxation in health spas among other various medical, and non-medical, institutes. Overall, Reiki treats Mind, Body, Spirit and Emotions. A non-invasive technique, the recipient is fully clothed, laying down with soft music or environmental sounds playing in the background. The practitioner’s hands hover slightly above their body at locations known as Chakras (the seven energy centers running from the top of head to the tail bone), the arms and legs also receive energy. The Energy from your practitioner will automatically go where it is needed and the experience is safe, painless and very relaxing for anyone of any age. Energy This 'Universal Energy' is already present in our body and necessary to nourish organs and cells, supporting them in their vital functions. When this Energy is blocked, illness may follow. Reiki helps break up these energy blockages, stimulating the Life Force already present in the body to flow freely once more. At times, breaking through these energy blockages may result in emotions from the past surfacing. This is a perfectly natural reaction. Feeling of sadness or grief - tears may even flow without realizing it at first. The more we stifle our emotions, the more we clog up the energy pipes and the harder it is for us to continue our lives positively due to unresolved matters. The trick is to breath deep during these emotional times and relax. Just allow them to run their course and flow out of the system. Throughout our life, we are subject to much that helps us, or hinders us on that journey. Negative energy, either generated from within ourselves, or from others in the form of anger, sorrow or guilt can cause damage to our aura in the form of rips, tears or holes, allowing more negative energy to seep in more rapidly. Words, thoughts and actions all have energy as their base, and they can be projected and attach to our aura. This negativity may sit for quite some time while doing its damage. If negative conditions continue, the damage not only grows, but will begin to manifest (become physical) into ailments - sickness, headaches, and dis-ease. Through Reiki, this negative energy may be removed and the aura repaired. The benefits of Reiki are far reaching: Improving chronic and acute medical problems, Improve and boost the immune system, Assists the body in clearing toxins, Stress reduction, Increases body’s natural energy, Assists in post operative recovery & healing of injuries.
